Pipe Dream #84: To Sun In

I have three ways of approaching a photo edit. 1) Make the photo look as close as possible to the light and colors of real life. 2) Make the photo look as close as possible to real life but better (usually higher saturation and contrast, plus correcting any weird color casts). 3) Edit the photo as I WISH it was in real life.

All that craziness about taking ten pounds off with Photoshop is actually quite do-able. I don’t want to contribute to that nonsense though, so I stay away from it (Although I will take away zits. THE ABHORRENCE OF THE ZITS IS SO REAL TO ME.). My new rule of thumb that I just made up is “Edit places, not people.”

Enter lens flares. I love lens flares a lot. It’s to the point where I will sometimes FAKE them when I edit a photo. Pretty ridiculous maybe. But sometimes I like things to look how my mind sees them instead of how they actually are.  I won’t call it art, but I will call it sometimes-the-inside-of-Lauren’s-head-is-cooler-than-real-life. Or should I say “warmer?”

I add warming filters a lot too. Warming filter + lens flare = ideal photo. People look prettier when they’re warmer. More human. And landscapes look sunnier when they’re warmer. They look as I wish them to appear.

So it’s great when you go to some really sweeto place like a hilltop with a bunch of old ruins on it and horses and the light is already really warm and you don’t have to do any work editing because they already look exactly as I want them to. Super bad sentence, but do you get what I am saying?

Good, because as we’ve just discussed, everything appears better in my head.
